This book is a story about coming of age in the 1950’s and sixties. It is a compelling story about the social and cultural conditions of the author as a black child born out-of-wedlock whose mother died at the age of 22 because she was denied admission to a “whites-only” hospital in Alabama. The author describes his early childhood and adolescence as a period when he periodically found himself one step from disaster; a time where he almost lost his life and how he planned unsuccessfully to kill others who had offended him.
